Today, we will explore 2 Samuel 16-17, which depicts the trials David faced while fleeing from Absalom's rebellion, and how God's protection and wisdom were revealed during this time. Through these stories, we learn the importance of trusting God and acting wisely even in difficult situations.

1. David's Trials and Shimei's Curse (2 Samuel 16)

A. Ziba's Deception

2 Samuel 16 begins with David encountering Ziba while fleeing from Jerusalem. Ziba, the servant of Mephibosheth, brought provisions to David and claimed loyalty to him. However, as we later learn, Ziba's words were all lies, as he deceived his master Mephibosheth to gain favor from David. "Ziba answered the king, 'Mephibosheth is staying in Jerusalem, because he thinks, “Today the Israelites will restore to me my grandfather's kingdom.”'" (2 Samuel 16:3) Ziba's deception shows the human tendency to take advantage of difficult situations for personal gain.

B. Shimei's Curse

As David fled, a man named Shimei came out and cursed him, throwing stones at David. Shimei claimed that David was being punished for what he had done to the house of Saul. David's men wanted to kill Shimei, but David stopped them, believing that this trial might be part of God's will. "But the king said... 'If he is cursing because the Lord said to him, “Curse David,” who can ask, “Why do you do this?”'" (2 Samuel 16:10-11) David endured Shimei's curses with humility, accepting everything as potentially coming from God.

Lesson:

  • Humility and Patience: David accepted Shimei's curse with humility, believing that his suffering might be God's will. We need to trust God's purpose and humbly endure challenges in difficult times.
  • Human Nature and Deception: Ziba's story reveals how people may lie for personal gain during times of difficulty. We need discernment to avoid being easily deceived by others.

2. Absalom's Advisors (2 Samuel 17)

A. Ahithophel's Counsel

Absalom sought advice from Ahithophel to pursue David. Ahithophel advised attacking David immediately to create confusion and defeat him. His counsel was strategic and advantageous for Absalom. "Ahithophel said to Absalom, 'Let me choose twelve thousand men, and tonight I will set out in pursuit of David.'" (2 Samuel 17:1) Ahithophel's advice could have been effective, but God had a different plan to protect David.

B. Hushai's Counsel and God's Protection

Hushai, David's friend, approached Absalom pretending to support him, but he was actually trying to help David. Hushai countered Ahithophel's counsel by suggesting that all of Israel should gather to attack David together. Absalom accepted Hushai's advice, which gave David more time to escape. "For the Lord had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom." (2 Samuel 17:14) God used Hushai's wisdom to protect David and prevent Ahithophel's plan from succeeding.

Lesson:

  • God's Protection and Wisdom: Hushai's counsel being accepted over Ahithophel's was part of God's providence. We should trust in God's protection and guidance instead of relying solely on our own wisdom.
  • Wise Action: Hushai acted wisely to help David. We too can be instruments of God's will by acting wisely and carefully in difficult situations.

Modern Application: Trust and Wisdom in Difficult Times

A. Trusting God with Humility

Just as David accepted Shimei's curse, we may face challenges that we do not fully understand. In such times, we should trust that God has allowed these trials for a reason and endure them humbly. We must believe that God knows our circumstances and will guide us to a good outcome.

B. Acting Wisely to Fulfill God's Will

Like Hushai, who approached Absalom wisely to help David, we should strive to act wisely in difficult situations. By praying for God's guidance, our actions can serve to fulfill His will, and we should always make careful decisions.

Conclusion: Moving Forward with Humility and Trust in God's Will

2 Samuel 16-17 shows us the trials David faced during Absalom's rebellion and God's protection. Through David's humility and Hushai's wise actions, we learn the importance of trusting God and acting wisely even in difficult times.

"May we live with humility, trusting God's will, and act wisely, relying on His protection."
