Today, we will explore 1 Samuel 20-21, which tells the story of David fleeing from Saul's relentless threats with the help of Jonathan, and how David continues to rely on God during his time on the run. These chapters teach us about genuine friendship, trust, and relying on God in difficult situations.

1. David and Jonathan's Friendship (1 Samuel 20)

A. Saul's Plan to Kill David and Jonathan's Help

Saul's jealousy and fear of David did not cease. David, aware that Saul intended to kill him, sought help from Jonathan. Jonathan genuinely loved David and wanted to protect him. To confirm his father's intentions, Jonathan attended the feast, and when Saul grew angry at David's absence, Jonathan realized that David's life was indeed in danger. "Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him. Then Jonathan knew that his father intended to kill David." (1 Samuel 20:33) Jonathan used a secret signal to warn David of Saul's plans, allowing David to escape safely.

B. Emotional Farewell

Jonathan and David met for the last time and bid each other an emotional farewell, praying for each other's safety. They promised to remain faithful to one another before God. "Jonathan said to David, 'Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the Lord, saying, “The Lord is witness between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants forever.”'" (1 Samuel 20:42) Their friendship was a pure relationship of trust and love, centered on a covenant made before God.

Lesson:

  • True Friendship: Jonathan and David's friendship is a model of true love and sacrifice. Jonathan even gave up his potential right to the throne to support David. We should strive to cultivate such genuine love and trust in our relationships.
  • God's Protection: Jonathan's protection of David shows how God uses others to safeguard His people. God often protects us through friends and family during difficult times.

2. David's Escape and God's Guidance (1 Samuel 21)

A. David in Nob

While fleeing, David went to Nob, where he met Ahimelek the priest. Ahimelek was puzzled by David's arrival alone, but David claimed he was on a secret mission and asked for help. Ahimelek gave David the consecrated bread and also provided him with Goliath's sword. "The priest replied, 'The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is here... If you want it, take it; there is no sword here but that one.'" (1 Samuel 21:9) This scene shows David relying on God's provision rather than his own strength as he continued on his journey.

B. David Before the King of Gath

David then fled to Gath, where he sought refuge with Achish, the king of the Philistines. However, when the servants of Achish recognized David and threatened him, David pretended to be insane to escape. "So he pretended to be insane in their presence; and while he was in their hands, he acted like a madman, making marks on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard." (1 Samuel 21:13) Even in desperate situations, David acted wisely to protect his life.

Lesson:

  • God's Provision: David receiving food and Goliath's sword from Ahimelek shows how God meets our needs. When we face hardships, God provides for us in ways we may not expect.
  • Wise Action: David pretending to be insane before the king of Gath shows the importance of acting wisely in tough situations. God grants us wisdom when we seek His guidance during challenging times.

Modern Application: Trusting God's Help During Difficult Times

A. Rely on God in Times of Crisis

David continued to trust in God even while facing Saul's constant threats. We, too, must rely on God and seek His help during the crises of life. God knows all our circumstances and will make a way for us.

B. Support from Friends and Family

Jonathan and David's friendship serves as a great example of how we should build relationships. God provides comfort and help through our friends and family. We should cherish and be thankful for these relationships, especially during challenging times.

Conclusion: God's Protection and True Friendship

1 Samuel 20-21 provides us with important lessons about David's escape and God's protection. David trusted God even in desperate situations, and he drew strength from his genuine friendship with Jonathan. When we face challenges in life, we must trust God and lean on the support of those He has placed around us.

"May we trust in God and find strength in the relationships He has blessed us with."
